Get the kids out and about these school holidays

It’s the last week of the school holidays … are your kids bored? If you want to do something fun with the kids that won’t cost an arm and a leg, here are five suggestions – all within 30 minutes’ drive from Palmwoods.

  1.       Skippy Park – Landsborough

Pack scooters, bikes and roller blades because the kids will spend hours at this fantastic park just outside Landsborough townships. It features a flat and wide 2.2km bike track a kids’ playground with sandpits, rope climbing structure, two flying foxes and a fantastic slide.  There are sheltered table and benches, bbq facilities, swings, toilets and a climbing tree. Drive time from Palmwoods: About 30 minutes via Eudlo. Free.

  1.       Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve – Maleny

Take the kids on a lovely rainforest walk and then relax on the grass as they have fun in the big playground. Pack a blanket, some food and your camera to capture the beautiful views of the Glass House Mountains. The rainforest walk is open from 7am to.  Drive time from Palmwoods: 24 minutes via Balmoral Rd. Free but gold coin entry appreciated for rainforest walk.

  1.       Chenrezig Buddhist Institute  – Eudlo

Bring some peace, love and calm into your day and take the kids to the lovely Chenrezig Buddhist Institute at Eudlo. Walk around the exquisitely landscaped gardens, appreciate the shrines, paintings, mandala and the stupas dedicated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and the main kind residents and teachers who have turned the institute into a vibrant centre. Shaded seating, water features and bushland with lots of native birds and animals will delight everyone.  Drive from Palmwoods: 18 minutes via Eudlo and Highlands Roads. Free.

  1.       Opals Down Under

Young and older kids will enjoy fossicking for gemstones at Opals Down Under. The ‘Scratch Patch’ lets the kids fossick through thousands of different gemstones, including opals. From as little as $8 or $15 they can fill a container with as many gemstones as possible, that they get to keep. There is no time limit and you’ll have heaps of fun!  There is a grassy area for a picnic and play.  Drive from Palmwoods: 23 minutes via Chevallum Road.  $8 or $15 depending on size of container.

  1.       Bellingham Maze

A visit here can be as active or relaxed as you’d like. Find the tower in the middle of the hedge maze, take on the Dwarf quiz or the Harry Potter quiz in the hedge maze, next find the 8 dead ends in the timber scrabble maze, compete with your family and friends on the rope maze, try your skills on the tyre maze, box of books or traffic lights maze, play 18 holes of mini golf or just sit in the garden cafe and relax with your favourite coffee! It’s entirely up to you.  Drive from Palmwoods: 15 minutes via Chevallum Road. Entry is free. Activities (maze and mini golf) start at $14.50 per child.
